Pineville Elementary Students Connect With Newberry Award Winning Author
Students and teachers from Pineville Elementary’s fifth grade classes participated in a special videoconference event with the Newberry Award winning author Avi, who was on site at the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, Virginia where he recently conducted research for his new book Iron Thunder. Students from schools in Michigan and Ohio also participated in the hour long program that featured the author who has written over 68 books during his career. The book Iron Thunder is about the U.S.S. Monitor, the famous Civil War ironclad ship. The Mariners’ Museum is the repository for all of the artifacts from the shipwreck of the U.S.S. Monitor. Avi discussed his writing, the book, his research and questions that the students had for him. Pineville Independent School District’s videoconferencing programs are conducted in collaboration with The Center for Rural Development through the CenterNet 2 Network. “CenterNet 2 is assisting our district in bringing the world a little closer to our students, “ said Diana Anderson, Pineville Independent’s media specialist and distance learning coordinator. “The opportunity to interact with an author of Avi’s distinction is an opportunity that before CenterNet 2 would have been out of reach for a district of our size. This experience allowed our students to meet face to face with the author and then participate in a discussion with students from around the country.”
