Current RecyClinic co-coordinators Avi Giladi and Sarah Greene delivered a recycling videoconference session on March 23, 2006 from Vanderbilt’s campus in Nashville, TN to 3 schools in Kentucky. One of the Kentucky schools represented was Whitley County Middle School, which connected via the CenterNET2 Network. Schools from Texas and Costa Rica were connected also as part of the Vanderbilt Center for Science outreach "Virtual Scientist" program. “This was a great way to reach kids,” Giladi said. “The students asked a lot of questions which made it more fun for us,” added Greene. The two presented a wide variety of information about recycling and waste reduction, focusing on some of the important (yet basic) science, environmental, and societal aspects of any recycling program. In addition, discussions about where to find recycling bins, the ease of recycling, and small tips on how to incorporate recycling and waste reduction into daily living were included. The ultimate goal was to raise awareness in these middle school students to the value and importance of recycling in a community. As part of the Vanderbilt University Medical School commitment to healthy living, second year medical students maintain a recycling program on the Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s campus and disseminate information locally and globally in educational forums.
