Vanderbilt Virtual University Presents Careers In Engineering
Jan Zanetis of Vanderbilt Virtual University provided high school students in Rockcastle County, Kentucky and Fairland, Ohio with a virtual field trip that featured an overall discussion of engineering followed by discussion on some of the 14 branches of engineering: Aerospace; agricultural; biomedical; chemical; civil; computer hardware; electrical and electronics, except computer; environmental; industrial, including health and safety; materials; mechanical; mining and geological, including mining safety; nuclear; and petroleum engineering. Students were provided a problem statement with background information and led through a basic engineering design methodology as they brainstormed and developed potential solutions as a team;, students were introduced to research and design, researching skills and investigated engineering careers and were taught the differences between “careers” and “jobs.” students then developed potential career paths and investigated and researched the educational requirements necessary for a career in engineering.
