Computer Check-Up Checklist

STEP ONE - Check For Viruses Running On Your Computer .
To check for viruses, click here to run McAfee Stinger program. If asked to "Open or Save" this program, choose "Run" or "Open". This the Stinger Virus program as soon as the download is complete. When the Stinger program opens, press "Scan" to begin scanning your computer for common computer viruses. This program will terminate most common viruses, but it may not eliminate or find ALL viruses on your computer.

STEP TWO - Install Critical Patches for Your Computer
If you are running either a Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system, click on the appropriate link below: Windows 2000 Critical Patch
Windows XP Critical Patch If asked to "Open or Save" this program, choose "Run" or "Open". This will install the patch as soon as the download is complete. If you are NOT running any of the above operating systems, go to STEP FOUR.

STEP THREE - Re-Scan For Running Viruses by Repeating Step 1
It is possible to become reinvested with a virus until the critical patch has been applied. It would be wise to re-scan after STEP TWO by either running a save copy of the McAfee Stinger or clicking on this link and choose "Open" to run the Stinger program again. Once these steps are complete, continue on to STEP FOUR to prevent any further infections.

STEP FOUR - Install Microsoft Critical Updates On Computer.
Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and install all Critical Updates for your computer. It is a good idea to check regularly for updates to prevent any newly discovered security bugs from being exploited on your computer.

STEP FIVE - Install and Keep Some Type of Virus Protection

STEP SIX - Install an Internet Firewall
Firewalls are not just for broadband (DSL/Cable) users. Dial-up users should use a firewall also. Click here for some of the more popular firewall software.

STEP SEVEN - Rid Your Computer Of Adware/Spyware Software.
Adware or Spyware software is usually installed and running without your knowledge. These types of software cause excessive pop-up advertisements and can take over your Internet browsers. Furthermore, Adware/Spyware software can slow down your Internet connection considerably.
